Bouleau Blanc Map Activity

Below is a map representation of the trails at Bouleau Blanc. Red indicates the trails and blue indicate the brook that passed through Bouleau Blanc. You may recall the first trail we took looks similar to a rectangle and the second trail we took after lunch looks similar to a circle. Look closely and you see trail distances are displayed. Use the information found on the map to answer the questions below.

  1. What are the names of the dimensions found in rectangular 1st trail?
  2. What are the names of the dimensions found in circular 2nd trail?
  3. What distance or perimeter did you snowshoe in the 1st rectangular trail?
  4. What distance or circumference did you snowshoe in the 2nd circular trail?
  5. What was the totally snowshoe distance for both trails?
  6. I asked one of the students to time our travel from the cabin to the bus. The time was 15 minutes 27 seconds to travel 3 kilometers. Approximately how fast did we return to the bus? (Answer in kilometers/hour)

Bouleau Blanc Field Notes

In the comment section of this blog post, please complete your field notes from the days events.  Your field notes should answer the following questions.
Describe the weather?
Where did you go?
When did you get there?
What animals did you see?
What animals’ marking/observations did you see? (i.e. tracks, sounds, etc.)

Snowshoeing at the Bouleau Blanc

Students from Tabusintac Rural School from grades 6 to 8 traveled to Fairisle New Brunswick to participate an outdoor learning adventure called Rabbits in the Woods.  Students snowshoed several kilometers throughout the Bouleau Blanc club area.  We had a great day filled with learning activities and great food.

We viewed rabbit tracks and discussed about the life of rabbits in the woods of New Brunswick. Explain and describe the adaptations rabbits make to their environment that allow them to improve their success in the wild?

First Nations people are very respectful of nature. They observed the rabbit, and were impressed on how rabbits were able to perform in the snow. What did they recognize in the rabbit that they were able to create and adapt to improve their performance in the snow?
